The last days

We know the final stage of life comes with many emotions, and often family members are unsure of how to support.

We know the final stage of life comes with many emotions, and often family members are unsure of how to support. Being present and ensuring your loved one’s wishes, values and beliefs are in place is a great start. Here are a few other ideas to offer support and comfort:

  • Know that you can be there to support your loved one 24/7 during their final days.
  • Share cherished memories and stories amongst visitors, being mindful of your conversations around them, as they may still be able to hear.
  • Hold their hand or massage hands with a scented hand cream.
  • Read to them from their favourite book, a poem, or stories that bring comfort.
  • Play their favourite type of music to soothe them.
  • Provide their favourite food or drink, if they are able to consume it.
  • Brush their hair or give a gentle head massage.
  • Use wipes to moisten their lips and clean their mouth, following guidance from the nursing team.
  • Wash their face with a warm, damp cloth.
  • Pray with them if spirituality is meaningful to them, or invite their spiritual leader to visit.
  • Notify the nurse if they seem uncomfortable and ask any questions you may have.
  • Share comforting moments in their bed.
  • Arrange for a pet visit or ask about pet therapy sessions.
  • Invite therapists like reflexologists or massage therapists to provide additional comfort.
  • Welcome family visits and encourage phone calls or virtual visits for goodbyes.
  • Keep a journal to record thoughts, communicate with others, or let children draw pictures as a way to express emotions during this time.
